Description:

Ancient Gandharan Stucco Buddha Head
Circa 300 to 400 CE. Gandharan
A stucco head of the Buddha, modeled in the Greco-Buddhist style with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes, a naturalistic nose, full lips, and elongated earlobes. This piece is a premier example of Greco-Buddhist art, demonstrating a strong syncretism between Eastern and Western traditions. Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and, with the help of Indo-Greek kings, introduced classical traditions that influenced Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The stylized, curly Mediterranean hair and topknot derive from classical sculptures, but the Gandharans adapted that influence to create a distinct style of their own, often focusing on portrayals of the Buddha, as exemplified by this piece.
