Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795–1875) was the preeminent animalier sculptor of 19th-century France, renowned for his powerful and expressive bronzes of wild beasts, mythological subjects, and heroic combat scenes. Trained as a goldsmith and later at the École des Beaux-Arts, Barye brought unmatched anatomical precision and dramatic intensity to his work, earning acclaim at the Paris Salons and establishing a new standard for animal sculpture. His finely cast bronzes, produced both in his own foundry and by later editors, remain highly sought after for their dynamic modeling and enduring influence on the animalier tradition.
