  • Provenance: Cataloguer's Note:
Auguste Carli (1868–1930) was a French sculptor from Marseille, best known for his allegorical, religious, and funerary works. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, he developed a style rooted in academic tradition but infused with expressive detail and sensitivity. Carli received numerous public commissions in southern France, producing monuments, fountains, and war memorials, as well as religious statuary for churches. His funerary sculptures, often found in Marseille's Saint-Pierre Cemetery, reflect both realism and symbolism, demonstrating his skill in portraying human emotion and spiritual themes. Today, Carli is recognized as a significant figure in Provençal sculpture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, continuing the regional tradition of fine stone carving and monumental art.
