Description:

Franz Bergmann Vienna Bronze Princess Figure
Late 19th-early 20th century, Austrian
A cold painted Orientalist themed bronze figure of a princess with her dress train being held by a servant as they walk on a ornately decorated carpet. Fine detail throughout both figures with gilt accents. Her train has engraved signature "Nam Greb" on the side, which is a pseudonym name for Austrian artist Franz Xaver Bergmann (b. 1861 d. 1936). Marked on bottom "A570".

  • Provenance: A Note on the Sculptor: Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861–1936) was a Viennese foundry owner renowned for his production of highly detailed cold-painted bronze figures, often called Vienna bronzes. Inheriting his father's workshop, he expanded the foundry around 1900 and oversaw the casting and finishing of works created by various anonymous sculptors. Bergmann's repertoire included Orientalist subjects, whimsical animalier figures, and cleverly hidden erotic Art Nouveau pieces, many signed with his distinctive "B" in an urn-shaped cartouche or the cryptic "Nam Greb" (Bergman spelled backward). His innovative dust-paint technique gave the bronzes vivid, delicate coloration, though the method was fragile and is now lost. The foundry closed during the Great Depression in 1930, briefly reopened under his son Robert until 1954, and eventually the molds and inventory were sold. Today, Bergmann's works remain highly sought after for their craftsmanship, playful inventiveness, and visual charm.
