Description:

Khmer Shiva Lingham Carved Stone Sculpture
Approx. 9th - 13th Century, Cambodia
Khmer Shiva Lingam Carved Stone Sculpture
Cambodia, Angkor-style tradition
A finely carved stone Shiva lingam executed in the classical Khmer tradition, embodying one of the most enduring symbols of Hindu worship and royal authority in Southeast Asia. The lingam serves as an aniconic representation of the god Shiva and was a central devotional object in Khmer temples, where it symbolized divine creative power, cosmic order, and the sacred connection between kingship and the divine. Khmer examples were commonly fashioned from polished stone and installed within temple sanctuaries throughout the Angkor period.
The sculpture displays the austere geometric form characteristic of Khmer religious art, emphasizing spiritual significance over naturalistic representation. Traditional Khmer lingams often feature a tripartite design, with sections symbolically associated with Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, reflecting the unity of the Hindu cosmos.
Its elegant simplicity and powerful symbolism make it a compelling example of Khmer devotional sculpture and an attractive work for collectors of Asian antiquities, Hindu sacred art, and Southeast Asian archaeological material. Whether displayed as a religious object, historical artifact, or sculptural work of art, the piece reflects the profound spiritual traditions that flourished throughout the Khmer Empire.
