Description:

Monumental Persian Tabriz Alabaf Silk Blend Rug
Persia, Late 19th-early 20th century
A monumental Persian Alabaf Tabriz silk blend rug. The rug consists of a red body with dark blue and green colors throughout. Accents of lighter shades, like blue and pink, present. This rug has Farsi script across both sides and is signed by the Master Alabaf near the tassels. Signature is flanked by red, white, and green stripes. Throughout the rug are various floral ornamentation and tendril-work, as well as figural depictions of men on horseback in the corners. The central medallion (medallions are integral identifiers of Tabriz rugs) feature birds, traditional symbols of good luck and love, and interesting depictions of dragons and lions engaged in battle.

  • Provenance: A Note on Tabriz Rugs: The Tabriz region in northwestern Iran has a deeply rooted history with rug-making dating back to the Safavid Dynasty. It was the strategic location of Tabriz along the Silk Road that fostered the uniqueness, culture, and highly sought after craftsmanship of Tabriz rugs and their lasting legacy.
A Note on the Symbolism: Historically, the significance of lions and dragons as cultural symbols can be traced back to the 13th-17th centuries, when the importing of Chinese textiles and ceramics into Persia/Iran saw a rise in a mesh of Chinese and Persian culture. Lions and dragons share the same symbolic meaning: strength and power.
