Description:

Olaf Metzel (German, b. 1952) "9 Swimming Pools" Tribute Ed Ruscha" Aluminum Art
2016, German
An aluminum, stainless steel, and digital print art by Olaf Metzel (German, born 1952) titled "Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass (Ed Ruscha)". Signed and dated on the back side.

About the Work:
"In Olaf Metzel's tribute to Ed Ruscha, the image printed on the front and back of the metal is from Ruscha's famous "Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass" (1968), an artists' book containing nine color photos of swimming pools found at motels in Los Angeles and Las Vegas ending with an image of a shattered drinking glass. Scholar Kevin Hatch has noted that this is the only book of Ruscha's printed in full color and the tightly framed crop around each of the pools emphasizes the artificial blue color of the chemically treated water. Olaf Metzel has transformed the image by exaggerating the blue of the pool in the photogaph and blowing it up to a size in which the printed den-day dots of the image are enlarged and accentuated. Photographs for Metzel are akin to sketches and provide a starting point for his unique sculptures. In this work the text of the title of Ed Ruscha's book and artificial blue are striking visual points among the bends and folds of the metal."
