Description:

Persian Heriz Wool Area Rug
Iran, early 20th century
A Persian "Heriz" wool area rug featuring a dark red color scheme with ornate geometric floral patterns throughout in red, dark blue, pink, and light cream with white tassels.
The term "Heriz" is used to describe rugs or carpet that are made in the villages outside or near the town of Heriz, east of Tabriz in northwestern Iran. Heriz rugs can be identified as they are often "room shaped, stout" and are described as an "offshoot of Tabriz carpets... a country version of the styles"* with geometric angles and contours sharper than the more refined Tabriz carpets. When looking at a Heriz rug, like this one, take notice of the floral elements and the central medallion, which are the iconic characteristics of these rugs. Heriz rugs are largely associated with their strength and have undeniable charm.
Quality: 24/26

  • Provenance: A Note on the Persian Rug/Carpet Making Process: For the rich red color as seen in this rug, it is most likely that a dye called "Madder" was used, madder is a traditional form of red dye or mordant used throughout Persia, and there are two types. One creates a rust-color tones and one is known to produce more orangey colors. Finally, "it's important to know that water hardness, the amount of mordant, soak time, and additives all affect the final wool color."*
